What flange size do I need for my breast pump?

It looks like it should be straight forward. Just place the breast pump centered over nipple and away you go.... that the milk should just flow. So it's completely understandable when your milk output is less than you were expecting when pumping and it just doesn't seem to be working.

The answer often lies in the pump flange size. And there's a simple fix Mama!

Did you know that the majority of  breastfeeding Mums around Australia are using the incorrect size flange when pumping?

Australian breast pumps come with two standard flange sizes- 24mm and 27mm, However many women need a much smaller size.

What is a breast pump flange?

The flange is the part of the breast pump that comes in contact with your body when placed onto the breast and nipple, forming a vacuum seal with the areola. It’s shaped like a funnel.

Why is it necessary? Well, the flange draws your nipple into the tunnel of the pump where milk is extracted. The flange also helps to create necessary suction to extract milk by forming a sea.

How to find the correct breast pump flange size?

You need to measure your nipple diameter at a time when you haven't been breastfeeding or using a breast pump. Measure the diameter of your nipple at the nipple base. (please make sure it's at the nipple base and not the tip) Add on 1-2mm to this measurement and that's your size Mama.

A flange fits correctly when:

  • your nipple is centered in the tube
  • no parts of your nipple rub against the sides
  • little or no areola is pulled in when the pump is turned on

A pump that is suctioning your breast correctly will mimic how a baby would suck. Your nipple needs to be able to move in and out of the flange’s tunnel to do this.
